Random Meeting
I am leaving the newspaper office on Main Street
at one o'clock in the morning the first Wednesday in July.
I always work late the night before the paper goes to press.
I write editorial and articles for a small town weekly newspaper.
I live alone in a one bedroom apartment.
My boyfriend is in the Army and is stationed at Fort Sill
in Lawton, Oklahoma.
I am starting my truck.
"A Country Boy Can Survive" by Hank Williams, Jr.
is on the radio.
The full moon spills milk all over the sleeping town.
As I turn right on Main Street I see the large skunk
crossing the road.
The skunk looks at me with red eyes.
I look closer and see that the skunk is pregnant.
The skunk does not trust me.
She scampers across Main Street.
I drive home slowly
hoping the skunk doesn't take
too many more chances.
