Skunk Sonnet

A skunk foretells the dawning of the day

By crawling back into his den for rest

If threatened, startled, frightened, he will spray

Though normally not easily distressed

Misunderstood as pest, of great offense

Unpleasing to encounter in your path

Or rabies risk, to shun at all expense

Though stench is simply cured by means of bath

In fact the skunk, inquisitive and shy

More fearful is of you than you of he

If you stay calm he’ll wander off, no lie

And you, skunk sighter, will be filled with glee

Next time a skunk encounters you I trust

You’ll be amazed, and not filled with disgust
