GUIDELINES/ JUDGING INFORMATION

A few suggestions:

-should involve skunks in a significant way (but skunks can be used metaphorically)

-try to look beyond the smell; think about what other qualities skunks possess that might be                           poem-worthy.

-we are looking for polished poems that demonstrate some sort of unique or personal connection                   to skunks.

-avoid cliches. this particularly applies to purely humorous or descriptive poems.

-happy, healthy skunks are preferred over dead, dying, or seriously injured skunks.

-if there are dead, dying, or seriously injured skunks in your poem: be sure that you a)use a                           properly somber and mournful tone and/or b)celebrate the skunk's life.

-give your poem a title!!!

-for skunk information go to http://www.skunksarecool.com/info.html and follow links.

-if you do use skunk "facts" (taxonomical information, defense mechanism description, etc) in some way, make sure your information is not completely inaccurate.

-check your poem for spelling mistakes and typos!!!!!!
